Seen everything? If not, come to Kiel and check out our new air purifier!

EU scientists had found out that people who lack the means and/or common sense to move out of the direct proximity of major roadways die significantly earlier than those who live in nice suburbs. They link this to carbonmonoxid and have set a limit at 40mg per cubic meter. A candle in the room equals around 200mg. If these limits are met, the town has to do something, s.a. driving bans for diesel engines. Needless to say that you don`t want that in a country with a thriving car industry which is quickly recovering from a scam software scandal.

Most European ciites have made full use of their tolerances and installed their sensor stations on roof tops or 20yrds away from the driveway etc. This one station here - hidden in the picture behind the air purifier - does not allow for that tolerance though and hit the limit. The city has actually considered to speak out a ban for elder diesel engines for one lane - just to get the readings down. Now they try the 80,000€ purifier.

It was critizised that the purifier was placed on the bicycle lane, blocking it. They discussed a solution on stilts but rejected it since the good clean air was supposed to benefit the children and elderly pedestrians and should not go up and be waisted...

This is not a joke, I am not making this up.

Hookup, you don`t get the EU. Please don`t get this the wrong way, few people do.

My cousin`s wife had a grandpa who worked at Ford. He ordered himself a modest little fiesta for his retirement. Since he knew both the cars`s weakpoints and his colleages, he went along the production belt ant told the guys to apply a little extra paint here, a little more seal there etc. nothing fancy that couldn`t be done with a little bakshish and a clap on the shoulder for old time`s sake.

About 25 years later, after he had passed the car on to her, the technical supervision guy came out of the pit and offered to buy it from her because it was in such a mint condition. What I am saying is that it is absolutely no problem to make an affordable car with an economical life span of more than 20years.

Today`s car manufacturers however - at least the German ones- tell their suppliers all the same: "make that cheaper, it only has to last 100.000km!". Then again, they need to have their products to be perceived as "old" and turned over before they actually break down. They achieve this through establishing ever-new technological standards, mostly with respect to emission control. You have no imagination how many 5-year "old" diesels are being scrapped lately. Cars that me and my friends would have given a finger for, back in the early 90ties when we started to drive and the freshly re-unified east Germans bought out the used car marked.

you don`t get the EU

I understand it more than you think

Don't forget, we got Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie

"make that cheaper, it only has to last 100.000km!"

Remember what happened to Ford, GM, and Chrysler when they took the planned obsolescence biz model?

As soon as you meet a standard they cut it some more. If you could make a zero emission vehicle that ran for free they would find something wrong with it. In automotive school we had several older vehicles that we were able to make pass newer emission standards without all the controls but they weren't "legal" by epa. That whole business with VW and the software deal was a bunch of BS. I know of several of those vehicles and they were one of the cleanest running diesels that I had seen and they did it without having to use DEF fluid. (which is another questionable thing) They got good milage and had decent power but with the so called correct software the milage dropped and so did power. Would like to know how to burn more fuel make less power but clean up the environment?  Obamas cash for clunkers was another piece of work that really was a total waste of resources. I always wonder how many of those people that received a (new free) car still have it?
