Trick-or-Treat

In the sprit of Halloween I am going to call these jigs Bluegill Tricks or Treats. These are 1/80 #10 using Rayon Chenille #00.

Those should do the 'trick' just fine. Really like the bottom left jig, i use a similar color combo but with a green tail, i like the barred looking tail! Another combo that has been doing well for me is a chart. & dark olive mix. Be prepared though with extras, the gills will chew them up and will easily swallow them. Trying to get a 1/80 out of a gills throat with pliers is not easy... i usually mess up a few that way.

Looking good Len. Those little guys are tough to pull from a gill belly. I like the single red strand in the tails too. A fella I met in Oklahoma a couple years ago was tearing up the crappie below a bridge. He was using jigs that he had tied in a simple pattern with marabou tail. He showed them to me and everyone of the jigs had a single piece of long red thread tied in the tail. Told me that was the secret to catching crappie. I've never tried it, but looks like he's not the only one with that secret!

Gentlemen thanks for the comments. One thing I like about this jig tying hobby is that you can design and build almost any type of jig you want and will never see anything like it in a tackle shop!

Well what do you know . First time I've seen that jig style in 15 yrs. Looks like you know the trick to wrapping varigated chenille. Not everybody knows that or does that good of a job. Here is an experiment for you . palmer a hackle feather against the back of the head then tie the rest. Yes the red thread does (God only knows why) help catching crappie.

Yes it is two colors of chenille. I got this from the fly called The Brim Special in steps 4...5...6...and 7 of the attached tying instructions for the fly.

Len, those look great! Ward Bean's site has a TON of good fly patterns and ideas on it...
I tied up a couple 1/80 oz jigs the other day with natural color rabbit tail and hare's ear dubbed body. That might be something else to try with those little jigs... The gills gobbled them up!
