Another idea for using a Sharpie. Spotting a lateral line.

Thought a juvenile spotted bass (or adult) might serve as a pretty good model for a drab green and white jig. One that might be useful when fishing for river bass. Used sage green, white and black craft fur on this tie with olive trilobal polyester thread for wraps.

My spotty lateral line looked better before I combed the jig. A bad hair day I guess.

I need more practice at this one. :jig:

Don't over judge your work... everything in nature is usually pretty random so that looks about right to me. Colors are dead on!
 :jig:

A little OT but...
I have a small local reservoir that i would be throwing that jig with full intent of catching crappie! I think that bass and bluegill fry are sometimes over looked as targets from crappie. This particular res. has a pretty high recruitment for bass and they are a major forage for the crappie. That was actually the first time i EVER caught a crappie on purpose. Saw the schools of bass fingerlings getting attacked from below. Put a small treble on a cane pole and snagged a bass minnow. Hooked it onto a pole with a bobber/hook set-up and it was game on.

It always amuses me when we designate what kind of fish we intend to catch with our creation. For instance I might tie a little bigger jig then normal with walleye or sauger in mind. Then one day find out the walleye and sauger won't go near but slabber crappies just love it. Or one of my squirmer lures for bluegill , while the blue gill do love it, the bass never give them a chance if they are in neighborhood. I tie it with # 10 hooks so you know bass was the last thing on my mind.

Another thing I find amusing. get great idea for jig . Run out to tie it up. Once done the thing just don't live up to expectations appearance wise. Throw in jig box anyway. Only one of this kind cause you just know it ain't gonna work. Either lend it to somebody give it to somebody or tie it on in desperation one day and WHAT ??? Not everytime but often enough it is the LURE that day. Of course it is lost that same day and you try to remember how to do your " failed creation. "

Atticas other comment about fingerling being prime food source. You better believe that one. Crappie love to prey on YOY ( young of year ) perch , bluegills , bass. Preference about in that order too. Bluegills return the favor and prey upon crappie perch and their own young. One of the biggest bluegill I ever caught as a kid was on a bluegill fingerling. I remember one day on Mosquito Lake catch crappie that were spitting up bluegill hatchlings all over the place. Their gullets were stuffed with them but yet they were hitting on our minnows ( fatheads ) that day. Must have been a feeding frenzy because it sure was not out of hunger.

I guess that what they mean when they say go with flow.

Great looking imitation. Everyone's comments on the bluegill fry for bass and crappie brought back some great childhood memories of me taking a bucket, dipping it in the lake where leaves were in bunches and catching small bluegill and crayfish since I couldn't afford minnows.. Caught plenty of bass, crappie and a few catfish as well.

Nice jig and the colors look great.
We have to many spotted bass as they are taking over a few of our lakes. Anything we use for crappie fishing the spots will hit. Heck, they will hit everything I try to fish with. Caught a real nice spot on a 1/16 curtly tail jig last year while crappie fishing muddy water in February.

Thanks for the comments Everyone. :)

Spotted bass are prevalent in the wider, slower portions of my local river. Thought I'd create a few of this pattern to interest most any black bass in the river, including largemouth and smallmouth. This morning, I tied a 1/4-oz. version to fish in stronger currents.

Sometimes I stand a fairly good chance of catching channel catfish, drum, flathead catfish, and sauger when fishing jigs in the river. I consider any of them a bonus catch.
