split shot flies

My son Josh read the post on here about making split shot jigs. We didn't have the rounded shot just the big crimp style.

This is Josh... my fly roddin' buddy!


He added 4 shot to a off set sickle hook, painted the shot and tied a fly with it. Not bad for his first time playing around with shot. He filed off the top of the shots to make it flush and added a barred olive zonker strip.

Looks like a cool fly! Sort of tied Matuka style on the back by the looks of it, that will catch fish for sure. You both must have way better fly rod casting skills than me, that thing would be thumping off the back of my head on every other cast. :beat-up: I have a hard time throwing weighted stuff on the FR, but that may even be cast-able with spinning gear.

He's a diehard flyrodder.... been fishing the long whippy rod since he was 5 years old. Now he outfishes me on the trout streams. I still "win" once in awhile on the bass streams. He like to nymph fish and I like to huck streamers.
