Spider ties

Here are a few bass spiders I did today. The top jig is a 3/32oz walleye head painted light pumpkin, the tail is a brown sculpin UV2 rabbit strip along with gold flash. The body is large brown chenille with orange bio silk skirt material tied on the collar to finish it off. The bio silk skirt material is sold at Lure Parts Online or LPO, I've been using it since it came out, it has all the advantages of silicone with the action of rubber. It works really well, especially on jigs when you want the skirt to flair, unlike silicone that takes a few seconds to fan out the bio silk will seperate and fan out once the jig is in the water. It doesn't reack with any plastics that have salt and doesn't melt like the rubber, it really is good stuff. The bottom jig is the same as the top jig, the difference is I used natural bucktail for the tail material instead of the rabbit, this will make it better for slower presentations.

Those are interesting. Would not have thought of adding the skirt at the neck on a bass jig. Love the colors of the jigs.

how did you get the legs 2 stand out like that? ive been tying bream bugs using the rubber legs that CAD sales and they want 2 flair out pisses me off!

YJ, to make the legs stand out it depends on a few things, the first is the material, round rubber is ok but I like this bio silk silicone because it won't melt but it still has bounce like rubber strands do. If you have good material then all you need to do is tie it in but you need to tie it so the part you want sticking out is facing the jig head when you tie it in and then when you have it done if you think the legs are hanging down a little more than you like you can simply trim a little off until it is out like you want it. The legs sticking out on my jigs in the picture are a little over an inch long so they are about an inch and a half total with a half an inch used to tie it in.

You can get almost the same effect with the old flat pad rubber strands. Tie them in a little short, tie in tight and when you stretch the pad of rubber out you have to cut really SLOW at the end your holding so the strands come apart. I like to do a brown/orange strip of each.

Fatman, this bio silk material is based of the old flat rubber but it is silicone, it is light and it doesn't melt and believe it or not it really does have the action that the rubber had. The thing with this stuff is I was very skeptical when I got it and while it didn't feel any different to silicone holding a single tab, you did notice it holding a buch and it is really noticable in the water!! The other nice thing is the material standing out and I do have bronw and should have added those, thanks for the idea!!!!!

Ridgeliner, the only place I know that sells it is Lure Parts Online or LPO for short. It is a little more than standard silicone but it really has nice action in the water. It comes in two different color series, the classic which are colors that are more of a matte or muted variety and the electric which basically is bright versions of colors but the electric has a really good color that I've had success with and it is called "coffee" which is a brown that is very close to black.

THey don't carry them, as far as I know the only place that has the bio silk is LPO, I believe it is exclusive to them. I get most of my skirt material from Charlie Hymes and fishingskirts.com but they only deal with one company so for specialty stuff like rippled material or bio silk you have to go to Barlows, LPO, or Janns Netcraft.
