Here is a couple of jigs I did today, the bottom one was something I was working on for awhile to get it right. The top jig is a 3/32oz walleye jighead painted black, it has black and natural bucktail blended together for a mottled look. After the bucktail was tied in I took some red and a tiny bit of yellow hackle barbs and tied them in for accent and then used some black with blue flake starflash skirt material to give it some added movement in the water. The bottom jig as I said before was a patteren I have tried before with mixed results but I think I got it. This one I call the hairy back sculpin, it is a 3/32oz walleye jighead painted black with a brown sculpin UV2 rabbit strip tied in for the tail. After the tail I tied in brown bucktail all aount the jighead in normal bucktail fashion and then I took some short pieces and tied those in so that they flaired out at the top but not so much at the bottom. I did that for the top and bottom areas of the jig and when that was done I cut the short pieces of stiff bucktail from the very bottom very bottom of the tail and tied in a clump on each side of the jig, these flaied out like you would see when spinning deer hair. Once that was done I carefully whip finished the jig and then trimmed it up around the collar so what I ended up with is a hair collar and sort of a hair cape over the regular bucktail. It is hard to see in the pic but it is pretty neat as the bucktail underneath is a little on the sparse side so you have this thick upper body that goes into a very natural looking taper, I think it will be great for smallies on the river.
