Powder Painting Horse Head Jigs Tip

I recently got a new horse head jig mold and have been experimenting with powder painting and keeping the swivel clean. I have seen people mention foil, different tapes, and cooling the swivel with water. The foil and tape worked ok but it was pretty slow and tedious for me. I didn’t try the water dip because I didn’t want to risk getting the powder paint wet. I thought I would share a method that has been working pretty well for me. I’m not sure if this method has been mentioned before but I haven’t seen it anywhere.

Basically I use an alligator clip to cover the swivel when dipping in my fluid bed. I use a heat gun and hold the jig with a pair of pliers to heat, then I transfer the jig to the alligator clip and clip it over the swivel. When dipping I don’t put the clip into the powder but go up to it. I still get a little paint on the swivel sometimes but it comes off easy with a fingernail.

I went through a few alligator clips before I found one that closed cleanly. I cut a little groove in the clip where it meets the swivel so it will close and surround the swivel almost completely.

Anyway maybe this will help someone out. I have attached a pic.

How much powder gets through the jaws??? Looks like a great idea but that would be my only concern. I've always used tin foil

and after dipping I take it off before curing.

I don't paint horse heads, but I always like to read about solutions to jig making problems. I never know when I might have an opportunity to apply something like this in, perhaps, another situation. Nice idea and thanks for sharing.

Not for horse heads, but for the small tie loops on light weight jigs, I use a pair of hemostats. Works well.

Most of the time no paint gets through the jaws. When it does, its minimal and comes off easily. I started out using foil but was looking for something easier. With this method I just "clip and dip"? Maybe I should trademark that? Heh, just kidding!

Might have to try a few that way - dip method might be okay but worry about brush tapping but next I powder some I'll give it a try - got a few clips in the box somewhere.

Nice thinking! I used to be fine with shrink tube, but there was always a stem of paint that got through. Often enough to stick the sviwel so tight that it broke off when I tried to free it. With a 2 coat, I lost almost 1 out of 10 on a bad day. This method seems much quicker. I´ll definetely give it a try! Thanks for sharing!
