Powder paint coverage issue

I’m having a difficult time getting complete coverage on my jig heads. I heat them up with my heat gun. I’ve varied the time in front of the heat gun. Then I put them in a good boiling fluid bed. I’ve varied the length of time it’s in there and also tried a double dip. What am I doing wrong.

What kind of paint are you using? I've been painting jigs with powder paint for almost 30 years using a Bic lighter as my heat source and never used a fluid bed. You might not be getting the heads hot enough. I'd try stirring the paint and dipping straight into the jar with an extra second or two of heat added until you get the coverage you want.

I use an alcohol bunker burner to head and the finest screen I can find to tap the paint onto the jig.

Made a paint tapper from a tea ball infuser

Ariding88,

Are you having problems with only the white paint or all colors? I have had minor problems with old, white powder paint I bought at yard sales, mostly it was color fading or too thin in one application. Many times the imperfections are removed in the baking process, especially when on the round head jigs. The paint tents to melt and fill in the minor gaps. I also agree with JungleJim1 that you should try direct dipping in the jar of powder paint. Good luck and let us know if you solve your problem.

Thank you for your responses guys. Did some tying last night so I didn’t get to try out different suggestions. I’m using A heat gun as the heating source and I can tell you it will remelt the lead if it’s held there too long so I don’t believe that’s the problem. A will try tonight and dip with out the air on (same as just dipping into jar). I’ve got about 200 to get made up by the weekend and need to get this straightened out haha. Also, I’ve added two pictures that were after the baking process

We heat our jigs in toaster oven, over 20 yrs now. Make sure the jigs are clean[ no dust, every day any type of substance on them].Sometimes dust etc. will get in your paint Also fish do not care if they are not perfect, when the bite is on. Jigs get a reaction strike. We bought Pro Tech paint in 1 lbs. containers in 2001, we are still using the same paint today. I did have to replace the white a couple years ago but the other 20 plus jars are still being used today.

Looks like the head got too hot and developed bubbles. Some powder paints like from Harbor Freight are junk and should be avoided if you are painting jigs.

Kinda the same thing JJ1 said. I also had some white that was a pain. It seemed thicker and wouldn’t flow like the other colors of the same brand. I also use a heat gun with no problems, only takes about 3-5 seconds to heat up enough. If you preheat too hot it’ll melt and apply too much on the first dip making it too thick. Make sure your not getting any grease, oil, hand lotion on them too.
