I used some craft clay of my wife's to fill in the collars on my walleye head mold. There's still a little lead behind the head but now it's easy to remove.

nice work, glad that worked for ya Scott. could you put a cleaned jig head in the mold and reform the clay around the collar to prevent that from occurring

There ya go!!!!!!!! Wonder since you can bake the stuff hard if you could make a mold of a jig head and bake the thing hard would it take the heat of pouring lead into it???

That may work. I went to a MS C.com fall camp a couple of years ago and "beagle man" from MO was picking at me for bringing some boiled peanuts. Lol. I guess it's a southern thing. Anyway after I got home I made him a goober jig out of that clay and it was just like a rock after I baked it. He had a fit over the goober jig. Lol

One guy on the Texas Fishing Forum has been using regular modeling clay like you find at Wal Mart for years without any problems.

Never ate boiled peanuts till I came south. Not a favorite must be a acquired taste but do like the jig. Thanks for the heads up on the clay trick. Don't have a need at the present but could come in handy one day.

I called the Scupey Clay company yesterday to see if there clay could hold up to melted lead and said, "nope, the heat of the melted lead would desinergrate the baked clay". Well that sucks. It would have been a lot easier to be able to press out some head molds that I have the heads that aren't being made anymore. Like that 1/128 oz fly lead head I have. I just happen to stummble across those one day. Don't have many of those and have not tied with them yet. Have them, going to wait until I have a mold made for them. Might have found someone too. Got to give them a call!

Heather, Water Gremlin size B split shots are 0.011 ounces and come 70 to a pack for lead and 56 to a pack for tin. Just buy a package of the round split shot and squeeze them on the bend of the hook. Once you paint them, they stay put and the fish won't know the difference.

Well I had my walleye mold all fixed up with the collars filled in with the clay. I poured some this morning and when I opened the mold, the clay stuck to the lead and came out. Oh well, guess I'll just cut the collars off like I've been doing. I'm scared to try the J B Weld. I might try some Play Dough and see if it will stay in there.

Scott - I'm gonna get ya in trouble!!!! I used to just cut the collars off like you - just break down and buy the collarless mold then you'll be pouring both at the same time.

C'mon You KNOW you want another mold!!!!

Shoemoo is right, the walleye mold don't have a collarless version. I've got the collarless round head mold. I hate to do anything permanent to my mold so I'll just cut the collars off.
