Minnow boolies

Tied up some boolies using the minnow head paint jobs. Used silver fox hair for this one.

Guy I used to know was a tackle manufacturer and was a fishing tackle collector. Before moving to Florida he sold a bunch of very similar lures. He called them " Jig-a - dos. " As all they did was catch fish. Worked well for walleye and crappie here in northeast ohio. Only difference he used a round head jig. That was more than 20 years ago and every now and then someone mentions that lure.

Nice looking minnow boolies. Whatever you choose to call them they work well for sure. Fly guy's tie them on a fly hook and call them "PISTOL PETES". Cabela's carries them.

Curious about the Jig-a-doo I Googled and there is a reference in the April 1975 issue of Popular Mechanics. Made by a fella named Burke in Michigan and featured a "plastic lip" to impart action. Got a rave review by the article author for catching even bonefish and tarpon. I would stretch a guess that success on salt water apps may have been a factor in Mr. Burkes decision to move south.

Fatman, how did you manage to stuff such an unruly looking furball under a neat skinny wrap?

Hawnjigs- Guy I knew was a Mathews. His paint jobs on his jigs were excellent and durable. All his stuff was high quality and they carried the high price tag too for back then.

Amazes me some times how similar ideas are. guess its true about great minds thinking alike.

Hawn - after I cut it from the skin I pull the unruly hairs then measure and cut back a little more, then I take my fur rake and get alot of the underfur out Press the hair down on the hook and take a wrap of thread then slide the hair to the sides a bit and snug down and then wrap it tight. I flip the hook and tie some in on the other side. Then even things up and tighten down and clean wrap, two half hitchs, then I put a 6 turn whip finish on it. I try to keep the distance the same for the blades on everyone which is tough on the little ones.

Traded Jim for some of the fly size so I'm going to try some on my 1/32nd ball heads with #10 hooks, that should be fun!! But still bigger than the size 18 flies I posted the other day.
