Reading online comments Kastmasters are a favorite for trout and manys the time I've seen them catch nice trout locally. Not me as I'm a single hook jig purist. Long ago I acquired a Do-it Swim Jig mold for salt water fish back in HI top water skipping when papio (jacks) were surface blitzing baitfish. Never got a chance in HI but recent success getting bit by blitzing wipers here skipping a tin 1/4 size Do-it Flutter Jig.plus a recent report from Bob in MI that the only thing trout bit on a 3 day river trip were spoons & spinners ignoring jigs & even flies. So I thought why not try a Swim Jig which kinda functions as a narrow bodied spoon and poured a few to try using upgrade bent to fit Mustad Signature heavy wire salt water fly hooks #4 in the 1/8 size Swim Jig. Recently I discovered super glue to secure the thread wrap on the hook shank and that was the ticket to tie on a pearl Flashabou tail since only 5 wraps would fit in the narrow space between the metal body and the hook bend. The unpainted shiny lead free metal resembled a natural baitfish color and the fish apparently agreed.
Got one wet this past Monday and it cast farther than any of my other trout jigs and the twitch dart action was attractive speshly with the Flashabou tail shimmering. Started in our still water trout lake for 2 and later in the outflow river below the lake 4 more. Total 6 nice ones in heavy pressure public access water was encouraging. Subsequent trips boosted the total on that same jig to a dozen or maybe more until a bigun managed to bump a rock and break the 8# braid main line. The glued tail remained attached and the fibers could be pulled back to straight after getting bent on fish fights.
Bigger trout are smart and tend to avoid the same lure that they hit & missed or got stuck with Fishing 2 of the same river spots still got 3 nice ones today on a Swim Jig.
