If you were only allowed one jig to fish for one year, what would the recipe be? A detailed answer would be appreciated.

Mine would be a 1/16 oz red head, red thread collar with a silver mylar vertical fan skirt having a red mylar stripe running down the middle of each side. So far, it's caught 21 species.

One jig for one full year...... better be a durable jig! :p

I'd keep it simple with lots of flash:

1/16 (think i would prefer a regular bend hook but is what i had painted)
Silver head
Silver tinsel chenille
Gray & white craft fur
Pearl midge flash (lots)
Couple strands of black (or peacock) flash for contrast

Only one ..........

Mmmm.

Have to be a jig I can put a pig on, with enough weight to sit in a deep river hole & stay with any swirls or current.

Or a swim bait jig I pour w/ an erie darter style pig

Come to think about it, can't do just one.

The preponderence of 1/16 preferences is interesting. Wonder what Salty would post? Here's my well floggered 1/12 oz. #2 hook Boolie for most anything in fresh water and even a few salty tidbits.

This jig in a 1/8-oz. version.

sbmnw001.jpg

Materials:
  • 5/32-oz. ball head jigs with #2 bronze hooks.
  • Darice Craft Fur - silver (not gray or gray/silver).
  • Black UTC Ultra Thread - 70 and 140 denier.
  • Silver and/or chrome paint for head - the type is your choice (jig head is epoxy covered).
  • Black and white acrylic paint for eyes.
  • 5-minute two-part epoxy for jig head top coat.

Catches bass, white bass, walleye, channel cats, & larger crappie. I have great confidence in this simple jig.

If I fished from a boat more, it would be a 1/4-oz bucktail for sure. Pink head, white buckail with silver holo flash. But I mainly fish from shore, and a 1/16-oz works best for how I fish and what I fish for if given one jig.

I would have to pick one of the boolie also, been catching a lot of fish on them since I been using them so if I had to use only one jig it would be this one.

Custom olive head with fl. chart tapped on the bottom 1/16 shad dart head
Gold cone head with gold blade
Olive rabbit / dyed chart squirrel tail with pearl flash for the tail

I chose a 1/16 since I fish for many kinds of fish. You can catch almost everything with that size. It was avery tough decision. All these jigs look great and I can see why they were chosen.

Well, that explains your name YellowJacket. Are you born on the bayou?

Live ones scare the sh** out of me, especially if theres no water to jump into nearby.

Up until last year I would have said a 1/8oz brown and black bucktail jig with some black and red silicone strands tied in would be my choice but now I'm going to say a 3/32oz brown and black bucktail with bloack and red silicone skirt strips tied in. The reason is the 1/8oz bucktail was a small offering but it still had enough bulk that it would catch larger fish as well as numbers but the 3/32oz has done better in ultra cold water, 35 degree water and the 1/8oz was falling too fast, we couldn't cast the 1/16oz far enough but the 3/32oz was killer and even in warm water when you want to retrieve this slowly just keeping it barely off the bottom you can do it even slower than the 1/8oz which makes it that much better.
