Itsy bitsy lure saves the day!

Finesse lures usually mean lures 2-3" weighing near nothing or nothing as in floating lures. I've come up with a term - micro-finesse - for catching those little tail nippers whose mouths are too small to grab a lure deep enough to be hooked.
Recently I fished a lake under a bright sun with no clouds. The day was hot, but a steady breeze made it tolerable. The bite was DEAD! As I was calling it quits and returning to the launch, my lure started getting attacked by year-old fish no bigger than 3.5"
Three or more fish on shallow flats that dropped into water 8' or deeper, would attack on the same retrieve, but no hooksets.
I never before used a 1/64 oz jigs with #8 hooks, but figured I may as well just to see what was nipping my Crappie Magnet lure. The lure chosen was 1" cut off the tail of slim plastic worm. It looked like a mini-stick and exhibited a nice slow slow-falling, darting /wobbly action. Got Ya Ya little *^*%*s!

I fished the same areas around the lake and caught not only 4" fish but some nice sunfish, crappie and yellow perch along with some small bass.

I changed lures to this small spike tail and caught this decent yellow perch:

I was surprised to see fish striking small bait fish on the surface near the middle of the lake. No way was I going to pass up that easy strike, and sure enough, it added a dozen fish to the total in different areas in 18 FOW! This happened around 4:30 pm. Total caught - 63 fish along with a doz. missed hook sets.
The day was saved by using super-light jigs rigged with super-small lures. No doubt a light feather or hair jig would have done as well, which I will try next time after this DANG 90+ HEAT WAVE subsides! :censored:)

I went fishing with a buddy and gave him a new creation of mine: the paddle tail of a RUNCL swimbait attached to a small tube body using a candle to heat the ends.

We caught over 80 fish that day - few that were keepers, such as my buddy's yellow perch and small sunfish:

We also caught small bass and crappie:

Note: that small paddle tail gave the lure a fast tail flutter that fish came back for on the 2nd retrieve after a missed hookset. The 1/32 oz jig with #8 hook, hooked a majority of fish, helped by our light action rods.

The day was marred by a broken rod tip, a spinning reel with a line mess at the spool and my sonar that stopped working midway through. The best part of the day was finding three patterns that got us 83 fish to be exact.

Congrats on your situational adaptation to save the day. You are lucky to have the insight that smaller is sometimes if not often better. During the recent wiper bite I saw guys here throwing 6" bass worms, 4" cranks, 1/2 oz Kastmasters, 4" paddle tails stuck in the big lure for big fish rut. I often wait till they're done & gone before I target what they left behind with 2" & smaller jigs. I learned this strategy from old timer Merle who smacks wipers that have ignored bigger lures with cheap Walmart 1/16 white marabout jigs.

That yellow perch looks better than "decent".

Best opportunity here is a low water canal smallie bite. My go to is 10# Sufix braid which is adequate to reach the opposite bank from my stands and actually mitigates over casting into the rocks, most of the time anyway. Today for a fun change of pace tried my ultra light 4'6" Ugly Stik 6# Daiwa Grand braid main + 4# mono leader 1/32 #4 ball head 1-3/8" cut stub from the front end of a 4" motor oil Powerbait worm and it proved adequate to entice & land the big fish of the day.

Thanks, HawnJ
When the big bite is on - meaning larger lures or a range of sizes, you could close your eyes and pick a lure out of the tackle box. But when the bite gets tough,
smaller and slower seems to motivate those hypersensitive fish to strike. The seasonal bite (time of year) and time-of-day bite, is IMO the best clue what to use and where.
example: I took my son fishing to a lake I thought I knew like my shoe size - but didn't. He convinced me that the early bite may be the better bite, and he was right! August has been hot as **** this year with clear skies, no rain and calm winds - the worst mid-day fishing I've ever experience. But as always,, you got to first find the fish before you can hook them and that is cone with the right lures and the right place(s).

The south, deeper end of the lake showed humps and flats I never knew existed. The fish were on that structure big time at 8 am-11am until the bite stopped cold! Since he was only fishing to please his old man, I wanted to make sure he hooked some nice ones the easiest way possible. With the right lures and presentations, anyone can catch fish. We stayed with 1/32 oz jigs and small plastics and caught perch, sunfish, crappie and small largemouth. Mission accomplished! But as the sun got hotter and the bite tougher, he had the common sense to call it a day. No point beating a dead fish.

But as the above example demonstrates, you're never too experienced to learn new things when it comes to catching the most fish, small or large. More than that is the happiness you feel when discovering more solutions to the puzzle we call angling - kind of similar to opening gifts as a kid. As one addicted to the strike, the more the better!

Since my usual time of year 2 go to reservoir inlets have become barren, one due to a massive carp infestation and the other due to zero water flow warm water species bite is a no go so have had to depend on still water stocker trout for tugs. Luckily due to apparently abundant forage and no subsequent additions the Springers have grown up to a more exciting fun size. In a public EZ access area of our trout lake I have a so far undiscovered honey hole slightly off the beaten path best accessed by wading and the bite had been superb with shortened to 1-1/2" plastics getting hammered. At a point tho, the trout wised up and refused to bite them, so had to change up. Altho I haven't needed to down size here in Nebraska remembered that many years ago on a road trip to CO when the 1/16 #6 jig bite quit switching to 1/24 #8 renewed the bite, for awhile anyway. So decided to try even smaller & tied up a few 1/32 #8 brown mink fur "itsy bitsies" and those wizened shy trout couldn't resist. Decided to treat this only productive hold in the entire lake (thanks to worm dunking meatheads) gently and sessions were ended after catching 3.
