Hello, I'm new on here, just found it looking for panfish jigs on Google. I've looked around and I am blown away at the pics of some of these jigs! They look so cool and amazing! I myself just started tying (putting together) jigs, not really knowing how to do it, just going off of what i did with tying flies a few years ago. I got away from fly fishing so I decided to take up jig tying. I only have some supplies left for tying, what would be a great way to get started? Thread size? Jig head size (I'm guessing 1/32)??? Any help would greatly be appreciated, Thank you! I'm also from Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Our ice is still on the lakes so I do have some time until it melts and get out there to get some panfish!

Welcome from NY.

You will want to tie jigs that you will use. So anything for the fish you are chasing is a good start. You are going to find a lot of jig info here - sizes from panfish to large pike

You can tie anything from micros for panfish up to saltwater jigs; basic materials from chenilles, kiptails, thread, flash, even dubbing materials you used for flies for your smaller jigs will work. You know what you fish for and what colors are hot in your area. Stick with those to get yourself started and collect materials as you can. Good luck and jump right into it. Great sight for questions and info; welcome aboard:)

For panfish both my PA mentor and I independently arrived at a preference for 1/24 jigs for straight to the line casting & retrieving. For myself, 1/32 feels a bit light for casting & handling especially in windy conditions and the retrieve speed necessary to keep 1/16 off snaggy bottoms is sometimes too quick for max bite attraction.

Welcome Aboard.... Warning!! Jig tying can become and addiction second only to fishing with your creations.

If you watch here long enough you will see jigs from 1/100 up too 3-4 ounces
Most are in the 1/48 - 1/8 range.
Tying materials - the more the better but if you were tying flies you probably got enough to get started. Maybe some chenille for bodies but palmering works very well.

Several members here sell and trade anything and everything so always ask first, buy second. This ebay site is a members and he has always treated me right! http://www.ebay.com/usr/fishhunter775

Couple others come to mind as well.

Out here...
Howdy from west Texas... I use 210 denier a lot, but on the small jigs it builds up fast. I use 1/8 oz an 1/16 oz mostly, but do use other sizes. Jig swaps is a good way to see several styles all at once. Great bunch of guys and gals here... And oh yea, I kinda like white! ;)

Welcome aboard from South Carolina.

Jig sizes, you need them all :) 1/32, 1/24 and 1/16 is the jigs I use the most for crappie fishing.
