Hand held vises

Imagine tying with a vise you held in one hand. The screw in stand probably helped. The C clamp looks like it was added by someone with machinist skills. These type vises were used by jewelers also. I don't know how to distinguish the difference....

I recognize the 2 small vises used in machining watch parts later adapted into fishing. I've heard doctors used them too.
