If you plan on making small jigs with palmered hackle or marabou they're pretty important. Less so if you don't, but still handy to have. Especially if you have thick fingers. They're good for weighting down chenille and other materials to keep them under tension when you're doing something else to the jig.

I use em in tying flies but you can get some on all the on-line fly shops. Mine are all old thompsons that were given to me.
