Well after his pee wee football game yesterday, my grandson insisted that my son-ikn-law bring him to pop pops house because nanny is making wings and he has to learn to tie jigs!! He arrived, got a shower and ate then for 2 solid hours we tied jigs! At first I had him just wrap thread around old hooks until he got use to using the bobbin and after 20 minutes he was ready to try some scrap material and I was amazed at how quickly he figured out how to loosely wrap hair to hold it until it is positioned right and when Isaw him do that it was time for the real thing. This is a 1/16oz jig, size 2 hook and was done with black and brown bucktail. The only help I gave him was I cut the bucktail but I showed him how to measure it and trim it off with the first clump of material I gave him and after that I just cut it and gave him the hair and he did the rest. The hardest part for me was trying to teach him to use a whip finish tool because I'm left handed and he is a righty but he got it after a bit and was able to whip fiish the jig himself, I think it is pretty decent for his first time!!

Very nice - keep him going and all you'll be doing is fishing cause he'll be tying them all!!!! Just watch for excess materials going out the door!!LOL

Thanks guys, he is 11 and from the first time I took him fishing at 4 he has been hooked! He not only likes to fish but he loves lure making, he even helped make his own spinnerbait before a trip and on the bait he helped make he caught a 3lb 2oz smallie and I think him catching that fish on a bait he helped make got him wanting to learn more. I'll admit, I'm lucky that he loves fishing and moking lures as much as I do, I have friends that have grandsons that want nothing to do with fishing and it bothers them. But the little guy, he makes me proud with how much he knows and when we finished the jig he kept going until he could whip finish the jig to get it done, he could have asked me to do it but he was determined to get it down and he did a good job, now wait until he catches a fish on his bucktail, I won't be able to stop him from tying!!!

sj,
Great looking jig! Hook em while they are young, and they will fish for life.

With his new learned skills, I am sure Santa will be picking up vise for Christmas!

Teach him all you can between now and about 15 years old .. they may slack off then but later on they get back with it and have a lot of know how then ... Good Luck !!!!

Thanks everyone, I'm super proud of him no matter what but the fact that he loves to fish as much as I do is great and better still, he loves to make lures..That is the bonus!!! I'm expecting him to get away from it when he discovers girls but I wouldn't be surprised if he stays with it even when that time comes. The reason is the boy is really good at sports, he is a pitcher in baseball, and he plays QB in football plus he has some size so he also plays tight end and linebacker on defense, and when he developed a love of sports it still didn't matter, either after practice or after a game he would always stop by to see if I was making anything so he could help or he would let me know what days he didn't have practice so we could fish, gotta love the heart!!
