Monday was a cold rainy day on the Lamar River. We watched many storm cells come through this valley. I'm glad I brought a jacket to wear.
Mama Duck and her brood on the Lamar River.

Frost on the car. Very cold mornings at 32F at 6am. During the day the temp got to 80F. A 50 degree temp swing. We would start the day with jackets and long sleeves. Then by mid afternoon we would get sunburned!!

Yep, the thermometer in the car was right. 32F!!! Brrrrr......
The Madison River

The Gallatin River (almost the headwaters) here the river is as wide as one of our local creeks.
The Gallatin River in the Canyon. Very deep, very fast... but the fish still rose to dry flies.

Class 3 rapids on the Gallatin. You would wade 2 steps and the water was up to your waist.
This ain't yer "Endless Mountains" of PA. This is rough and tumble country.

Rubber boat hatch. Reminded me of the boat trips on Pine Creek Gorge. The fish didn't mind the boaters. In fact, I caught my first 'bow when the rafts came past me. Much to the chagrin of the boaters.

My first Gallatin 'bow on a Spruce Fly.

These fish live in the fast water. The size of its tail impressed me. They are strong fish. Even the little ones fight!!

Huckleberries - very big ones! Nice and juicy to eat!

JM with his first Cutthroat of the day on the Lamar River in YNP.

We fished among hundreds of bison on the Lamar. We gave them a wide berth. We could hear them snorting and stomping all day.

We were fishing in Grizzly Country.

Giant "Salmonfly" shucks on the Madison. They were about 3 inches long. We missed this hatch by about 9 days.

Every rock on the Madison held nymphs underneath. This cased caddis was as big and as long as my thumb. The bug life in this river was astounding!
