Dobson Fly Jigs

I got the idea from the thing-a-ma-jig I tied last week, my buddy saw it when we were fishing and said to me that if the hackle was straight instead of the "hands apart" style it would look sort of like a dobson fly. For those that don't know what a dobson fly is, well it is nothing but a helgramite when they get their wings and they are nasty looking and big. So today I thought I would try to tie something like that and here is the result. The top jig is a 1/8oz weedless ball jig painted watermelon, it has some silver flash, with olive and green bucktail for the body and then light green chartreuse grizzly hackles for the wings and finished off with some black bucktail tied in over top. The bottom jig is also a 1/8oz weeless ball jig but this one is painted black. The body is made of silver flash with black bucktail and then grizzly hackle is tied in for the wings with dark natural bucktail tied over top to finish it off.

I'm a believer. I've never tied something similar bit def want to try. They both look like fish getters. Thx for sharing the pattern. Will be much used among everyone I'm sure.

Nice.....how long are you taking to get this done. Looks like 20lb test type bait!

Thanks all!! PB, those are small and will be used with 6lb to 8lb line max. They only have a size #1 hook and are about 3" long at the tips of the hackle. These are made for smallmouth bass that are finickly in cooler water, in the warm water I'll throw a finesse jig that is 3/16oz with a 3/0 hook that might be 4" long from the top to the tip of the trailer.

Laid back soft hackle tie..... those will get it done. Love the colors you picked.

side note: have seen pictures of dobson flies but can not remember ever seeing on in real life out on the river.
