They sure look nice but from where do you take confidence that the hook point rides up?

Bucho, the "Belly Scratcher" concept, popularized by the guys at FlyFishFood, will tie a piece of wire to the hook, thread on some tungsten beads, then tie off the wire. It's placed on the side opposite of the gap, and acts like a keel.
