I haven't ever used much rabbit . I'm going to start raising some around here for the rug rats . Maybe give them something to do besides holler paw Brent every ten minutes . They are all girls under 3' tall . You don't by any chance know what breed of rabbit is preferred for tying do ya . The kids don't know it but If I wind up with to many Billy Joe Bobs and Mary Sues hopping around you can guess what is for dinner.

I'm not sure what breed they are. But,I'll find out. They are getting $2.75 for 3 10" strips, that are 1/8" wide. You'll have to read up on soft tanning.I think it would be a great little business to get into. Then on the side the rabbit manure once dried out is the best worm composting material in the world..Then the taste delisous.Wish I had some extra room myself.

Tanning is not a problem . Dying isn't either but good dye is expensive . I got room to raise a bunch of stuff . The problem is critters killing them . My police dog nailed a coon at 7:00 am . Broad freak'in daylight . Have to put spring lock on the rabbit hutch boxes or those sneaky turds will open them and go right in .

The longest hair that I have found on a cross cut zonker has been 1/2".Now some of them long haired variety wiould bring a healthy little sum I imagine.

Dampen the Hair with a spray bottle . then comb a segment to produce a cut line . Kind of like parting your hare Pun intended .

Looked at the pelts I have. The hair is really short . Barely makes 1/2 inch . I cut the stuff by taking a box knife blade and clamping it in a small vise leaving 3/4 of an inch sticking up. Start it on the cut line then draw the pelt towards me . A piece of duct tape stuck to the top of the vise and down the front will give a slick surface for the pelt to slide on and will help prevent any snagging . I guess I don't have to tell you not to reach over the top of that blade and focus when your hands are around it . There is another way not so dangerous but it's not designed for combing cut lines and you'll have hair bits blowing everywhere.

I looked into it, but bought a bunch precut and haven't tried it yet. I've found dyed pelts for $3 each at winter fishing shows.

This is along the lines of how I'd cut them.

I like this guy's idea, but after a couple barley pops, this could be dangerous. I'd add some backing to one end to prevent have zonker human strips.

For crosscut strips, just turn the pelt the other way.

If you want to raise rabbits for their fur, Rex is probably a good choice. They have super thick fur with very few guard hairs. Only drawback is it's a bit on the short side, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

Between skinning, tanning, stretching, dying and cutting, it's probably less hassle just to buy the stripped hides from Hareline. Retail price is $15 for 32 zonkers or 48 crosscut strips at my local fly shop. Might be able to get them cheaper at shows or online.

I've got some dyed Rex hides I want to cut, but those razor blade and bolt homemade things make me nervous just looking at them. While I liked Lord of the Rings, I don't really want to go through life looking like Frodo after Gollum nipped his finger off.

Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and do not have access to metalworking or woodworking tools. So for right now I'm stuck on how to proceed.

Get one of those little table top paper cutters with the pull down handles . Garage sales dollar store ect. Take your time and get one cheap . I have an ancient one 2' x 2' you can use for guillitine . Cuts anything and everything . I am going to get some rabbits just for the grand kids . I just didn't want to wind up with a stack of hides since I don't use much rabbit at all .
