I've been looking at buying an air compressor and a nail gun for small jobs around the house.
My girlfriend is very crafty, and we are going to be reupholstering the couch, and she has a bunch of Pinterest projects that she wants us to do.

What's a good size compressor to buy?
Right now I can pick up a 2 gallon for $70 and a 5 gallon for $150, locally..

Check the CFM output. Many air tools require 3-6 cfm at 40 psi for proper operation and bigger tools, sanders grinders etc are 8 - 10 cfm at 90 psi.

I would suggest going to one of the home improvement stores and looking at the prepackaged kits they sell that often include a compressor and a few air tools sprayer, brad nailer, die grinder etc.. The other thing to consider is the operating noise level. Some are so noisy that they are uncomfortable to be around and others you can barely hear run.

New compressors have come along way to reduce noise & efficiency.

I got one last year for honey do chores & the occasional tire maintenance at Home Cheap for about $120. I also have a couple nail guns & staple guns that I use it for. I've seen the same one at Harbor Freight for about 3/4 that price. It's a 6 gallon, 150 psi max, light weight, quiet (compared to my last one) and doesn't blow the circuit in my house everytime the motor kicks off.

My contractor buddy got the same one for driving nails & using a paint gun and loves it.
