A squid styled jig, its victim and Jigcraft karma

Been having a shocker lately. Four trips for four donuts, lost jigs, sunburn, aching legs from bouncing around a small boat in rough seas. Then I formally joined Jigcraft by saying hello, and went out again, the day before yesterday. Hard to find bait, water temp down, six hours of trolling livebaits for nothing but a small mako shark lost at the boat. Ugh here we go again. So we decided to have a few casts at the washes and rocky gutters and reefs below the cliffs which guard the entrance to the Harbour as we headed home.
Out came a 3/8th squid shaped head tied with bucktail and rubber "attack" tentacles.

And Jigcraft karma produced this:

37 inch yellowtail, we called them yellowtail kingfish, or just plain kings. They fight brutal and dirty and long. More so in shallow water. We tow the live baits on 100 pound braid and still get blown away. So this was a tin arse lucky catch on 20 pound braid, 40 pound leader and 7ft spin outfit. That's why I look so bloody smug.
The jighead has ever so slightly assymetrical wings so it zig zags on decent. Strong, forged 4/0 hook, red dome eye. Very good perfectly baked powderpaint. An excellent example of American jig head making.
I slip some lumo tubing up the shank, cut two "attack" tentacles from a plastic trolling squid, cutting the club end of the attack tentacles out of the plastic squid's lumo green eyes, and tye them in, along with a bit of flash, under the bucktail.

All up just under seven inches long. The kink in the attack tentacle club ends gives a wicked little action to them. A fairly sparse bucktail dressing lets subtle internal glow come from the lumo tube. Cutting the lumo tube longer than the jig's collar leaves a little hollow bit at the end, which you can stuff with a gel or paste scent if it's really tough fishing.
So I reckon Jigcraft karma turned a dog day into a ripper. Jigs rule!

Man,I love that jighead design.I've never seen it before. Can I ask you specifics on it,like where did you get it.I caught two yellowtail about 4 years ago on a 3 day trip out in the Pacific and what a tasty fish.We had yellowtail breaded subs cooked in the galley of the boat that night.Well done.

You can find squid head molds in some of the old Palmer molds . Missed one couple months back thought it was going cheap then the last few minutes it went out of sight .
bombora I know at least one guy that makes plastics down there see if I can hook you up with him . You couldn't wipe the grin of my face with steel wool if I caught a fish like that .

sweet looking jig and great fish!!!!!!!!! That would be a tough head to make, have to make a pop mold and make as many as you could till it cracks. That would be fun to downsize into a crappie size jig.

HT Lure Co. appears to have posted the wrong pic for squid heads?

And, interesting that they call one head style "Mann's" which might be a trademark infringement.

Hi guys and merry Christmas. Thought you'd like those heads Salty. I am hopeless at keeping track of the stuff in my jig making box. I take em out of the packaging and then months or years later can't remember where I got em. I'll have a rummage to see if some labels have fallen to the bottom.
Hard to tell if they are the same on that website cause pics taken from the side, but they look very similar. Same keeper barbs as mine which I filed flat. You gotta try the attack or hunting tentacles. Seems to just add a bit more allure to hesitant fish (well, who knows, but gives me confidence).
Hi Hawn yup same fish, sensational eating, 'specially raw. Mate a few doors down cooking his bit in a kettle BBQ as I type, yum, no, double-yum.
I had to get a cab from the wharf back home after a fish a few months ago cause of car trouble. Kept two smaller fish that day for friends. Lugged them to the cab and the Japanese Aussie taxi driver went mental: "You give me one fish you get free fare!!" Laughed all the way home, trying to tell him the cab fare was 15 bucks and a wild caught yellowtail of that size at Sydney fish markets was fetching about $150!
Hey Ledhed I've seen some fantastic fishing videos from Baha and read some great stories in mags. Seems a place with just awesome fishing.
Hey Fatman what's a pop mould? I know bugger all about head making.

Just looked at the painted squid heads at HT Lure co and yep they are the same heads. I bought painted ones with different hooks but it was a few years ago. You got the right jigs Salty.

Yeah bb - Baja still has the great fishing - no more driving down. Too many banditos - have to fly into your spot now.

Pop molds are molds made from "plaster of paris". If used for lead pouring - you need to make sure it is DRY!
