I tied some steelhead/trout jigs today and wanted to know what you all think of them. This is my first time doing this and I just copied what I normally buy from a local tackle shop. Let me know what you think. Also any tips/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Those look pretty good, really nice for a first timer.I like the marabou shorter in mine to eliminate short strikes.

Thanks Jim! I will try making the marabou a little shorter.

Very nice!!I like a long tail. For steelhead they usually take it deep.Good job.

Thanks azslabber! I guess it will be good to have a mix of lengths.

I am really glad I found this website!!!

Your off to a great start...When you get a little more into it ,find some head with out the collar,it will make your tying job easier, and wont have that barb protruding from the body.

Yeah untill I get my molds and hooks... I've just been taking a pair of tin snips and cutting the barb lead body off of ball head jigs then filing them down... Makes a much more uniform neck/body tieing onto the hook shank.

Those look good for sure. You're off to a great start. I don't pour heads myself, I just order them. I get the no-neck round heads mostly with #2 red sickle hooks. I'm a crappie fisherman and mostly use 1/6, 1/8, and 1/4 oz heads. I'll touch up the head with a file to get the bumps off before I powder paint them. I usually tie 1 to 1 1/8 inch of marabou on a jig by pulling the barbels from the stem, bunching them up and cutting to length.

Welcome! and those jigs look very good!

For the tail length, i can't say for sure..... these are small jigs but intended for BIG fish. If those previously store bought jigs catch fish, i would say match the size/style of them and then you can play with color options that might work better under certain conditions.

I can see where a longer tail might match the look of a leech better and a shorter tail match a minnow or other baitfish.

Your jigs look pretty good to me. I'm with RT and Mack concerning the grub barb on the collar. It should be clipped off or you could remove the entire collar. I clip the barb off with a crafter's flush cutter tool, then file down what's left on the collar with an emery board.

I tie using jigs with or without collars. Collared jigs may become useful to you if you'll be doing some tying with with synthetic fur or hair.

I like them, very cutiez. I use jig head with collars ane without collars, it just depends what you like. as far as length of marabou, rabbit or what ever I have handy, I'll measure that material just a little past the hook, enough to hide the hook. Keep up the good work!
