I spent all day yesterday driving to all the recycle yards I know of trying to buy some lead. Wow no one would sale anything. The last one I stopped at, asked one guy and no they didn't sell either but then a guy came from around the corner and asked how much I needed and what I wanted it for---Bingo!!!!!
Got 65 pounds of mostly old plumbers lead from old cast pipes and also got a big sheet of lead that was folded up. The last rain over the weekend had coved it with muddy water. Well it weighs 90 pounds but I'm guessing by time I clean the mud off it and let it dry out I;ll have around 75 pounds of lead, LOL. The best part......50 dollars. I'm set on lead for a long time. 7 recyle yards before it paid off. It does pay to keep trying.
The sheet of lead is the whole black trash bag, just uncovered a little for the pic.

So Cal I.E.
SH - you will be surprised how fast you will go through your lead. Excellent deal BTW - you got your lead cheap. Don't stop looking for more. Get it all into ingots as soon as you can.

The good ole epa is why they arent selling as much as they once did. They are slowly being forced to sell only to a recylce place.Least thats the story I get from three yards I once bought from.Guess they are trying another angle to stop us from making lead lures.

I got this from pull-a-part or a salvage for for vehicles for free. It is only 21.8 pounds of WW, but I spent 2 hours pulling them off of vehicles.

Epa and some new laws here in SC about recycling. Never would have thought you couldn't buy stuff... The people looked at me like I was crazy when I would ask to buy some lead. Use to buy lots of metal from recycling places, no more!

Is the bucket scrap hard lead? If its solder scrap it might have a valuable tin content with that shiny appearance. I consider unknown solder 50-50 tin-lead and add it to soft lead for a 20-1 alloy.

Last time I'll mention, soft lead should be saved for finicky pour jig heads or online sliding sinkers.

Interesting that junk yards won't sell lead anymore. Still, lots available from private parties - I just got offered 9,000 lbs!

Most of the lead in the bucket is plumbers soft lead but I'm not sure about the other that is shinny. I was able to scrap it with my fingernail so I think it is soft lead also.

Don't think it's so much the EPA as increased demand overseas. There's a huge demand for lead in China. I was curious about the SC law, and all I could find specifically had to do with lead in lead-acid batteries, which aren't a big lead source for hobbyists anyway.

I can understand the big demand if you look at all the lead jigs China is selling on ebay...

I hear you about the Chinese jigs. I looked into selling some jigs on ebay as a way to finance my hobby and quickly abandoned the idea. There's a lot of people out there who either can tie a lot faster than me or are making $2 an hour turning out jigs. Probably using sub-standard hooks too.

I think most of it is going for industrial uses and making batteries, though.

Scott, I wouldn't mess with the lead in car batteries, just not worth the risk with the other stuff that's inside them. I sell jigs on ebay, since 2004 when there was about 400 jig listings on average. Now there's usually around 9000 and most of the products from overseas look cheap. I bought some " VMC BARBARIAN" jig hooks from China once. I should have known better because they were cheap reproductions. The wire was to heavy and the points were dull. They wouldn't fit my molds properly so they went in the trash. Glad I only bought 100. Shoemoo, maybe try a couple of local baitshops and see if they want to carry some of your jigs.

Here is one story about copper but the laws cover all scrape. Here in the upstate of SC, stealing of everything has got very bad. The local law has been trying to slow it down but itn't much working.

Shoemoo - Like JJ said, try local stores and baitshops if you want to sell some jigs and mke some material money. I've got four stores in my area that sell my jigs. That's as deep into the business I wanta go. LOL

JungleJim - Thanks JJ, I didn't think car battery lead was worth fooling with, mainly because nobody mentions it.

If you can get the tire weight lead take it!!!!!!! You can smelt it down and the shooting boards you always read they're looking for it. TRADE!!!!!!!! If you can't trade mix the tire weight in a 2 to 1 mix 2 lbs tire weight/ 1 lb. pure. Some of the Do-It's will pour down to a 1/16th with tire weight lead.

Car battery lead is a NO-NO as has been said BUT!!!!!! If you find ones with the old lead terminals on them rip em off with vise grips they are pure lead and the only stuff you want off a battery.
