    rock-a-roo jigs

I realize that this thread has been going on for many years but I find the subject very interesting. Several years ago I emailed Larry Myhre, a retired outdoor writer from Iowa, about Caps jigs and I am posting Larry's reply plus a picture he sent me. Hopefully this will be of interest to some...

    rock-a-roo jigs

In a quick Ebay search foe the Doll-Fly, it appears that a walleye-like head was common as well as the ball head jig. A number of variants seemed to come later for panfish. Elmer O. "Doll" Thompson was remembered in the Knox News in this article...

    rock-a-roo jigs

Sorry Reddog, I see that the paper now won't allow 10 free articles like in the past. It might be worth the $1 to sign up just to review what Larry wrote in his outdoor articles.

    rock-a-roo jigs

To answer Hawn's question, "Whats so special about a Rock-a-roo jig head? Is it the same design as the original Elmer Thompson Doll Fly head?", I would refer readers to an article by Larry Myhre of the Sioux City Journal (Iowa) entitled "There is something special about Cap's Special" from Sept...

    Vise for large jigs (5/0).

Thinkingredneck, how do you like the Colorado Angler 102? I saw it for just under $25 on Amazon. I have the "magnum" jaws for my HMH and really like them for tying 4/0 and 5/0 hooks for 1/2 to 3/4 ounce walleye jigs. But as Hawn mentioned, they aren't cheap.

    Bass Gill Jigs

Nice ties QPassage! They look like walleye and smallie jigs. The blend of colors and feathers is good looking. I too, dye my own bucktails and feathers using RIT liquid dyes and Dharma acid dyes. They each work well but I prefer the Dharma (powder) dyes for bucktails for their richer colors...

    New business

Skeet and Hookup, I admire your ability to make your own rods! That is an art unto itself. Skeet, the rods you have in your photos look top shelf! I admit that the higher quality blanks make a great rod. I tend to buy the St. Croix brand and have never had a bad one. But the price keeps my...

    Weedless Darter jig mold

Thanks for the info on the tie. I now understand the unique color of the hackles. I recently acquired some bear hair and I love the action it has. I'm sure your jigs really have a nice quiver action to them.

Incredible feeling when a new design proves productive!

Congratulations SpoonMinno, your innovations are impressive. I also admire your patience in fishing these tiny creatures. I do remember 40 years or so ago when small 1" to 2" grubs were relatively common and pretty cheap. I think "we" get too caught up on new and fancy lures and often forget...

    Site down?

The problem was taken care of very quickly after I contacted the admin. I was impressed! Thank you for the quick response.

Big Fish From Shore At Night On Jigs

Hawn, I'm very impressed with your night fishing success! Your walleye tally is amazing! How many skinned knees and turned ankles have you gotten walking the rocky shorelines at night? I'm afraid I would be at the emergency room getting my knees stitched up if I tried to walk over rough...

    Weedless Darter jig mold

Jungle Jim, what is the material that you used to tie the middle pictured jigs? They look like a crayfish or possibly a bluegill. They are great ties! A true thing of beauty. Thanks for sharing them.

    Winter Jigs

Eddied, I don't tan the squirrel tails but rather, dry them. I trim the tail back to the point that there is very little flesh left on the bone. I then wash/soak the tails in a mixture of Dawn 4X dish detergent (to remove the oils) and Borax overnight. I then rinse the tails in clean water...

    Winter Jigs

Since the first of the year, I have had more time to tie jigs and I wanted to share some of my ties with the JigCraft readers. My favorite ties are bucktail (or deer tail) jigs. I get my tails from friends and relatives and then wash them, debone them, dry, sort and dye the tails to my liking...

    paint on eyes

Arne, I like all my jigs to have eyes. I don't know if it makes a big difference to the fish but I like the finished look. I am fortunate that my wife likes to paint and will paint the eyes on my jigs. She uses Testors and Model Master (no longer produced but I stocked up on it) paints from...
