3 yr old, 50 hp Yamaha with stiff stick steering What caused this problem and what could be the cure? Thanks for any info.

Also ... Grease the cable. May have to slide the cable out of covering and clean it all out.

Grease the pivot at the motor, some have a screw to adjust for stiffness of steering, so loosen it and see if it helps, if not remove steering cable to motor connection and verify cable or motor. Whatever it is shouldn't be difficult to repair.

If you can't get that one to work right let me know. I have a new stick steering setup that is out of box but never installed. Will sell it cheaper that you can get it elsewhere.
I got it to install in another boat of mine. I had to buy my cousins boat when he died. So I had to sell the boat I was going to install stick steering system in.
Hopefully you can get yours to free up.
