Here is another version of the Rootbeer jig, Fatman did one awhile back and I really liked it and it did prove deadly on big smallies in cold water so I made some only this time it is a little different. Both jigs are the same, they are 1/8oz weedless football heads instead of the round heads I used in my other versions, and keeping with my tradition I didn't use any flash. The jigs are painted brown and have an under body of orange bucktail and shorter brown bucktail tied over top and then finished with a collar of pheasent feathers. The original was from fly fish ohio and I didn't understand why the pheasent feathers were needed until I tied the first one, it isn't the "church window" feathers but the whispy green tinted ones near the rump, the color of those feathers provides a slight contrast to the rootbeer bucktail that make it look so natural but the camera doesn't pick it up which is a shame. I used a deep brown bucktail on my jigs as I couldn't find rootbeer at Cabelas but I did manage to find a deep dark brown that resembles the rootbeer color and it is what got me inspired to make a few more, along with the fact I lost 5 of them the last time I used them.
