Rockin' the Roo

After looking at the jigs posted by Redman a little while back, i tried to make some general copies of his Rock-A-Roo's. I mixed in some bright/flashy colors - walleye run the river here in early spring and most years the river is pretty well muddied up from spring rain. The vast majority of fisherman are using a pink, orange or chart twister tail on either a lead head or carolina riged on a floating head. Couldn't resist and made a few in more natural/dark colors. If'n they dont work on the 'eyes - sure have a feeling the smallies will eat them.

Collar: Bucktail

Don't stare at the 2 with the 'wandering' eyes.... they are self conscious enough about their deformity. Is powder painted eyes and too much makes them sag a little when they are cured.

Smoking jigs! The eyes on the bluegill looking one in the last pic makes up for the "wanderin" eyes big time!!! Awesome stuff bud!

Thanks RD. Was on a steep learning curve with the powder eyes. 1st batch i cured (20 heads) all but 3 of the eyes sagged. :dodgy: Next batch got better and the last one i did (2 days ago) did not have one eye that slid out of place. Maybe the predators will think they have the upper hand with half blind minnows.

I wouldn't actually tie one, but the flash chenille with hair overwrap looks very attractive.
Forward hook eye might be considered unbalanced by some...

Nicely Done. like some of them a lot like the second to the last picture. Don't care if they have a wandering eye. That is a neat shad pattern. Try tying some with a hackle tail. If fishing a muddy river or one that is cloudy here is a good pattern Yellow tail, Flo. Fire Orange body and White bucktail Hackle wing. It was one that always brought in a good mess of eyes for me out of the river in the early spring when the river was a little cloudy. It is always my night attractor pattern for Walleyes. One thing that I noticed in tying Walleye jigs is most of the time the least amount of material used the better off you are. Or in most cases less is more. Think that because of the Walleyes keen eye sight that it unnecessary to tie them very heavy even in the muddiest of water.

That style works just as well on pan fish . Especially in ponds with stained water . Sling any one of those in when the water temp is 60 or more and the fight is on . Big ole fat goggle eye perch love them things .

Hawn - Unbalanced if vertical fishing but these will always be on the move. May get off horizontal if really deep water tho. They are shot heads - if i knew where to get some poured simple round heads with forward eyes... i could give up the grinding. You know anyplace? 1/8 to 1/4 with 2 to 1/0. Most have way oversized hooks in those weights and the only hooks i see that go down that small are the EC O'Shaughn style.

Redman - The natural ones are my favs too, the bottom one in the 1st pic has a pearl cactus body and looks really cool in the sunlight. Tried to keep them tied sparse but added too much on a few. I was tying them with the collar facing forward at first then laying it to the back and making the thread neck as the last step... not sure if that is the right way or not. For the colors - always have wondered why so many use the bright colors in muddy water - My preference would be to use black/Black/BLACK in muddy water for other species but only have limited experience on the river run 'eyes and just followed the crowd and what they said to use.
