Was inspired by Pups feather worm in previous post. I love to catch huge gills and quite by accident long time ago discovered that big gills love tiny leeches.
Was walleye fishing at Mosquito Lake here in Ohio and was pounding them on large leeches. Well the bigger ones of the original 2 dozen were soon gone. As I was lacking one for the limit , my two partners had both limited out, I put a small leech on. A desperate move but they ignored everything but a leech that day. As soon as the slip bobber hit the water under it went. It wasn't a walleye but a HUGE gill. I took about a dozen of those gills on 4 leeches that were left. Never did get that 10th walleye. Back then the limit was 10 nowdays its 6.
Started tying little leeches on 1/80 and 1/64 oz jigheads. Using black rabbit mini zonker strips.. Everything was black and they have worked well. Not as deadly as the real thing but good enough to save the expense and time of running down small leeches. Hopefully Pups idea of adding a little red will make it a little more effective. Gills love red I do know that.
Included a 1/32 oz aspirin head " crappie fry jig " to give idea of size on the small leech.
