Cross yet another one off the species list!
Got cut from work early again. Stopped at a spot on the "river" to see if anything wanted to play.
I grabbed my light action rod and put on a size 0 spinner. First cast had a 2 lbs LMB rush the lure, swirl on it, but refuse to bite, and swim off. Second cast had a suspected Rock Bass follow, but not commit. Third cast was nothing.
Then I saw something. It looked like a short, fat Eel was just feet away. I could see that the dorsal fin was undulating. A Dogfish (a.k.a. Bowfin, Grinnel)! AND, it was interested in my spinner!
I made a couple casts, but this fish was practically at my feet, nose-first into the weeds, couldn't see my spinner coming.
I decided to just dangle the spinner in the water in front of the fish. IMMEDIATELY it surged forward and grabbed my spinner. The fight was hard, but short, as I just dragged it onto the bank.
Fortunately, I had grabbed my forceps, so unhooking the beast was fairly easy.
I also caught three Smallies, and the obligatory Rock Bass. One of the smallies flopped out of my hand and back into the water before I could get a pic of it.
