Gonna open a whole new can o'worms with this one.

Long story short, I me a guy this AM fishing some homemade jigs below a local river dam. They had so much flash I could see them from over 100 yards so I hadda get closer and investigate. After some BS and a hot coffee
its cold damp and windy today. We had a conversation about his jigs and jig tying etc,,,,, I did invite him to this site. Anyhow, he takes a whole pack of flash, slides his jig thru the zip tie then wraps a bunch of thread and pulls everything back and finishes the neck.

I showed him some of my jigs and you could see the wheels turning.

Anygow, my question is how many strands of flash or sili legs do you use when making the tail with just flash or sili legs for your small jigs. I use 4-6 on my smaller BG jigs and few crappie jigs 1/16 - 1/8 where I use 8 strands of pink sili and 6 - 8 strands of crystal flash. I know it will vary depending on the action you are trying to get but his jigs looked hreat out of the water but in the water looked to me like a shiny lump of metal.

So how many strands?

Depends a lot on water clarity. I think too much flash can chase fish away also. Was this guy catching fish? What kind? Lots of flash would work good for salmon since they really don't eat when they enter the rivers. They just snap at anything that gets close to them. Myself, I use six or eight strands in the tail. If I'm putting it on the side of the body I use two strands on each side. As a after thought, musky fishermen use all tinsel or flash on Cowgirls spinnerbaits and they are a hot bait.

6-8 as a rule depends on what I'm trying to achieve or type of fish . For instance perch 6-8 Sand bass at times will hit better if the bling is heavier . Never used a gob of it though .

I tie some jigs up to 1/8 with nothing but silver flashabou. I have no idea how many strands, but; make sure the entire jig is covered with the flashabou. Have been the most successful with this jig. Pop

I try and make my jigs as natural as possible, flash is an accent and in nature, very few things are sparkley so I use only a few strands like 4 at the most.

How many bites to a tootsie roll center !!! ;)

I don't ever count, more feather than flash for me but somewhere between 5 & 10 looks good in my eyes.

I tie a couple different all flashabou jigs. I also tie a jig with all krystal flash. I call it my steelhead killer. When guys I fish with ask what I have on and I tell them the steelhead killer, they know exactly what it is. A couple years ago I caught 5 steelhead with it and nobody else around me caught anything. Thats how it got the name. I actually have a recipe for it. I use 4 different colors and a set amont of strands of each color. The colors don't blend the same each time but they look very similar. Also it has a paint brush tail. That doesn't seem to bother the fish.

He was not catching fish but indicated that he usually catches a few smallies. I caught 3 on a brown/white 1/8 aspirin head letting jig roll over the spillway and into the basin. couple light jerks and fish on or it would settle to bottom

Don't tie many 'all flash' jigs but have had success with the murdich minnow fly pattern for smallies in the river. When they are targeting the schooled minnows in the fall, it is a winner for sure. Never tried converting the fly pattern to a jig alternative. There is another popular smallmouth 'all' flash pattern, but can't think of the name at the moment........?

Crappie or other panfish jigs (along with the other tail material) usually only get 2-3 full strands doubled over. Midge flash or Mirage flash are my favorites on panfish jigs.

Was going to mention the big flashy spinners that are ALL flashabou intended for pike and muskie.... MUSKYgary already did. Go figure.... :p

Often wondered if ALL flashabou jigs would work for walleye in the fall, never tried them though.

Ridgeliner - would love to see the jig...... the recipe would only be a bonus!

I tie some 1/16 oz jigs using silver and red gift bag shredding. Since the strands are flat, I tie a vertical fan tail in silver on each side of the hook and add one red stripe down the center on each side......then clip the tail just past the hook at various angles. So far they have caught 16 freshwater and 5 saltwater species. The jighead is red and I use red thread as well.
