#4 is pretty universal for me when I'm fishing tree tops vertically which is 93.57689% of the time.
Still learning.
A shorter jig, to me, doesn't catch on to many branches as easily. As long as you can feel the diff btwn a branch and a thump, the #4 works just right for me. I can handle a #2 decent nuff also.
BUT, if the water is moving good (I fish a river system), I've been having better luck with heavier weights. Heavier jig heads usually mean I hafta make a bigger profile to match the head. Bigger heads usually mean a bigger hook. Still struggling with all this, bc here the tree top or brush pile is king.
But fished 1/4 oz with #1's recently and it made a big diff when water was falling out at over 8 kcfs. And caught all sizes of fish.
Gon test something out tomor if I kiss good enough in the morn.
Now if I were to hit any gravel pit off the stretch of one of the rivers arms, the sky's the limit. I'm just not a troller.
Bigger fish, I'm not timid of using a 1/0 hook.
Trick is making a 1/4 oz jig look like a 1/16 oz jig.
Or ummm
I'm rambling
