As you guys know, I melt lead and make sinkers. I want to start pouring jigs. What mold would be good to start with and would work good for hard/WW lead alloy?

Things to think about......

- A mold with assorted wt. heads also requires different hook sizes for almost every size so you would require more start up cost to get the hooks...... but it also gives you an assortment of sizes you can sell which is a major plus i think.

- If you are hoping to sell them - do you know of any fishing tackle shops in your area? Could go do some research before you buy a mold and ask what sizes/styles sell the most in your area. You might have the best luck selling them that way.

You've been given great advice!!!!!! We know you've had trouble with selling the sinkers so do lot's of homework before kicking out the money for jig molds and hooks

I have a collarless round head mold I really like since I tie all of my jigs. It has 4 - 1/16 oz and 4 - 1/8 oz. it's the Do-It model JNR 1062.

...general purpose jig...

For multi-purpose, i would go with Scott's 1/16 - 1/8 but instead with the lead barb collar if that is available. In my area there are ALOT more that use plastic twist tails and the new swim baits than tie their own. I use my fair share of jigs with the lead barb collars for both plastic baits and some for night crawlers too.

As a commercial caster I agree that barb collar jig heads are way more in demand than no collar, and the most popular sizes for fresh water are 1/16, 1/8, and 1/4. A good starter mold would be the Do-it RHB-7-A with TAPERED BARB COLLARS, not the older spike barbs. A very common mold often available at a bargain price on eBay, or maybe on this forum if you ask.

You will need a bottom pour melter for consistent small head mold fill out using harder lead.

Just did my FET for the quarter, and by dollar amounts the significantly best selling size is 1/8, followed in order by 1/4, 1/32, 1/16. Due to the high cost of lead free metals I only get a few custom requests for heavier heads so can't say what that demand is like for cheaper lead heads.

So, if you're serious about selling jig heads and want to start with a production mold the RHB-8-48 allows you to pour 4 each of the most popular tapered barb collar round head 1/8 and 1/4 oz. sizes per pour set. An additional RHB-8-1632 will cover the 1/16 and 1/32 sizes.

This is just for starters. If you continue as a bizness you will keep adding molds per customer requests. I'm up to at least 70, and I know some of our members have more.
