First try at a thread head jig

Well I took my first try at it and You guys weren't kidding when you said they took alot of thread

Short-shank sickle hooks work pretty well for those. Machine embroidery thread is very useful for wrapping thread bodies imo. It's less expensive per unit used. You can use it as a base and finish with an overwrap of your favorite fly tying thread if desired.

Flat waxed nylon is the easiest for me to use for that . It lays in smoother and sucks up the clear coat very well . The heavier the thread the more visible the wraps will be . Your getting the hang of it . Just play with some thread types until you find what works for you .

Thanks for the info and I think if I do many more it's gonna be on smaller hooks!!!! That's a size 4 in the picture.

Thanks Stump - pulled out the red squirrel tail's. Definately gonna wrap these on smaller hooks.

My biggest has been a 1/64 with a size 8 sickle hook.Heck,if I was using the aberdeens like you I would have been out of thread five times over by now,lol.

I kinda figured that out about half way through this one!!LOL I can see doing #6 this way but nothing bigger, unless I get some of the filler stuff above. This should be good on the 1/32nds I did with the #10 hooks, and I may try some on the small football heads I traded Sonny for just have to get them painted first. I've been looking at Mudhole at the Size A large spools of rod wrapping thread, they have some new UV colored threads that are already treated, we'll see though.

I would like to make one like that but not with the size jigs and hooks I use! I know I won't make any of those in the near future but I really like the profile and look, I bet it is a perfect minnow immitator on a slow retrieve!!

I use 3/0 flat wax to build up the bodies for my hard bodies. You can tye a smooth body by rotating the thread every few wraps to keep the twist out. Usually clear coat at least 3 to 4 times. First coat is thinned down to soak into the threads.With the second coat I add glitters.
