I know folks target Crappie with fly rods.  I've caught a Crappie before, on-the-fly.  I wasn't expecting the first fish, as this is a relatively shallow BOW.  However, I do think they are spawning, as they were in about 12" of water, in protected areas, with a dark bottom.  No wood around, but they all came from close to a weed.

First fish, and the biggest, was caught on a Heterogenius Nymph.

Second fish, caught on the same nymph.

Third and last Crappie, on a Gurgle-Pop.  A freaking foam top-water bug, of all things!  Go figure!

Congrats. They are pretty small but sure look like they have their spawning colors. I caught a few small whites this weekend that had nice bright colors also.

Hawn, the area I was fishing is a series of really shallow canals/ditches. I highly doubt it's a natural body of water. I'm not even sure if there is a natural inlet/outlet. If it's overpopulated with Crappie, they could be stunted. One of my home lakes back in Oklahoma was that way, LOADED with stunted Crappie, 4 years old, only 6" long, and breeding!
