Well my friends liked my last "dobson fly" jig that I made 4 for myself and a little over 2 dozen for friends and it got me thinking about winged insects that fall in the water occasionally and so I came up with these. I want to know if you prefer the "wings out" on the right side or the "wings in" on the left and is it better with or without a collar. I will let the fish decide once I hit the water again but I would like to get an idea from the jig tying masters here at jig craft. These jigs are both 1/8oz ball weedless ball heads painted black, the jig on the left has black bucktail with green and gold flash for the body and funace hackle for the wings. The jig on the right has a body of black bucktail with gold flash and the odd dyed feathers for the wings and a small hackle tip tied in at the collar. I tested the dobson fly out as well as these in a tank and the action is really nice, I'm betting that on a 4' or 5' drop they would have a gliding type fall but it doesn't matter how pretty they look if the fish don't like them so after this latest cold spell eases up I'll be able to do real world test and see if the fish do like them or not.

Those are great! I would probably reach for the one on the right first but I think the fish would hammer either one. :icon14:

Nice. I would use the left jig but not in a 1/8 but a 1/16 so it would have a slower fall. I think I would want to fish it close to the top of the water and may work it under a float. Nice tying :) They both are good looking jigs.

I'd bet either would get bitten. Theoretically, the wings open should fall slower due to hydro-resistance. Neutral, non-aggressive fish might be triggered by a slower drop rate.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words!!! As with all my jigs I'll let the fish decide but it will be interesting see how much difference there will be in fall rate. When smallie fishing in the river the fall rate is super important in cold water but once it gets into the mid 50's it becomes less of a factor.
