New to tying don't have a ton of cash to spend on supplies. I know that Sally H's Hard As nails is good head cement( learn that from fly tying guys), yarn can be made into dubbing. Had a question about CHENILLE, is the chenille used in tying the same a the yarn called chenille found in craft and sewing stores? Thanks if there is a thread started on different materials I am sorry please post a link if there is.

You can use the yarn but you will not have a full body look that the chenille gives. Chenille will also slow down the fall rate of a jig. You can get a full body look with dubbin it but it will take longer on each jig. You can buy the 5 yard packs of chenille or you can order the regular chenille by the skein for 10.00 '72 yards'.
If you need, send me your address and I'll send you some chenille to get you started.

The chenille yarn is way different than the chenille you'd use for jig tying. Sally's is good but once you get more comfortable with tying a good whip finish is all I use. The only time I'd go with it is the thread jigs the guys are tying.

You might like the chenille yarn offered by Herrschners. Currently, it's on sale for $0.99 a skein (140 yd). Shipping and handling is a bit annoying with small purchases. However, the quality is very good.

They have holiday and sparkle chenilles that are on sale today as well.

I have some of the lime green. It's a 4-weight yarn that works well for wrapping 1/32 and 1/16-ounce jigs.

You can find some chenille at craft shops but most times you really have to dig to find it. The specialty types (like tinsel, cactus, trilobal antron, varigated, ice, etc.) i have never found at craft shops and some of them are worth the extra cost. In my personal tying, the tinsel, cactus and varigated get used a lot but have never been impressed enough with the antron or ice styles to re-order.

I'd suggest you get some standard tying chenille from a tying site/store and then you will know what to look for at other stores where you might find it local. Regular, medium size chenille from tying sites/stores is usually pretty cheap but if you don't have somewhere local to get it you of course are stuck with shipping cost.

Another great cheap and FREE material for jigs is squirrel tail. If you see one get hit cut the tail wash it really good and stick the cut end in salt, unless you want to cover it in borax for a while and really dry it up. I haven't had to buy squirrel tail, and right now in Vermont their are alot of them.

After Xmas is a good time to pick up tinsel & flash materials.

Trading is another way to get tying materials.

Buddy of mine gave me some bucktails that he got this way.

One day, he saw a deer get hit, so pulled over with his bag of salt/borax and his tree branch cutters & cliped the tail off and stuck it in a bag.

Some lady pulled over and gave him he!! for cutting the tail off. He said "Lady, the deer's dead and doesn't need the tail anymore" and the lady just about fainted.

I still laugh everytime I think about that story.

Forgot to mention........

If you look up how to use a dubbing loop technique, you can use a wide variety of materials to create dubbing that can look just as good as chenille, and have it in any custom color mix you want to make. When you spin the dub loop tightly, it makes whatever fiber you are using stand out similar to chenille. Canvas yarn comes in both bright & muted colors and really stands out well if it is chopped up and used with a dubbing loop.

I have a link that has some excellent information on dubbing loops - but can't seem to find it at the moment. On a different computer i guess but will look for it on my home PC tonight.

Dollar Tree dollar store...

Voila brand gift bag shredding comes in mylar silver, gold, red, blue, green, iridescent and clear.
The bag of iridescent is about ten percent iridescent and 90 percent clear. The clear is great for use with Sharpies for making your own colors......for example, brown on one side and orange on the other yields a rich reddish brown. Tying is easier when you tie on a strand, then bend it back and wrap a couple turns with the thread, locking it on.....then trim to length by cutting at a tapered angle.

Also, very fine colored fibers in their hair extenders for little girls in the toy section.

Sally Hanson Xtra Hard is good when you can find it.

Sally Hanson nail files, about 4 for a buck make good hook sharpeners.

As mentioned previously, the silver and gold holographic icicles make great flash material.

Visit your local yard sales, particularly the ones with lots of kids toys. Look for troll dolls. Troll hair is some of the best synthetic hair for tying jigs. You can frequently buy a troll doll for a dime or a quarter. Then, take it home and scalp it. ;)
