    Table for pouring

I need a small table for pouring lead. I live in an apartment, so I plan on pouring out on my deck. I need a small, sturdy table that I can pack away. I looked at camp tables, but most of them seem to have tabletops that are either slotted (bad), made out of thin pressboard (probably not good)...

Sucks losing a piece of sentimental gear

Went fishing tonight and the yellow perch were red hot. Must have caught 50 of the suckers. Most were around 8", but it was fun not even being able to keep a line in the water. I was using cut bait and had to take the skin off the hook to rebait. Pulled it off with my stainless steel needle nose...

My best low light/visibility pattern for bass and crappie

This pattern has been very successful for me on smallmouth and crappie in murky water and on moonless nights. The body is Estaz Metallique and the tail is black Arctic fox. Marabou and rabbit have also worked well for me. The black color and longer fibers give the jig a chunky profile and...

    Wholesale Sports out of business

I was looking forward to buying some more of that neat kaktus chenille when I visited my parents last week, but it seems Wholesale Sports sold their US stores back to Sportsman's Warehouse a few months ago. I stopped by three of their old stores and couldn't find any of it. The trip wasn't a...

    Bunny twitching jigs for salmon

Tied these up for my trip to the Seattle area next week. The back is a magnum zonker, while the belly is crosscut zonker and polar chenille. Some krystal flash out the back and silicone skirt material for legs completes the package. If I have any left after I get back, I'll use them for bass.

    Mold alignment?

I have the walleye jig mold with recessed eyes. I haven't tried pouring with it yet, but when I hold it up to the light and look through the mold the hole where the hooks emerge aren't perfectly round. The two edges seem offset by about a millimeter. Is this anything to be concerned about? Did I...

    Boxes of fun!

Had three boxes waiting for me today. Thought I'd share the goodies. :D Box #1, from Barlow's: I've had the lead pot for about a month, but this is my first mold. Found out I'll need to slightly modify one of the cavities to fit a #4 sickle hook. The silicone legs came from the closeout...

    Big articulated jig with weedguard

Dug through some old tackle and found some super-sized heads I bought when I was still living near Seattle. The hooks are too weak for salmon, but I figured I might as well practice for when the jigs with good hooks arrive. They should be OK as articulated jigs, since the front hook doesn't...

    Share your weird fishing stories

Anyone who spends much time on the water has some weird stories to tell. Here are some of mine... Earlier this year I caught a black crappie with no upper jaw. I know the old joke about ripping their lips off, but this crappie literally had no lip at all. The upper jaw just ended in a little...

Looking for 1/2 ounce and 3/8th ounce heads

Going to visit my parents near Seattle this fall and I want to try my hand at jigging in saltwater. Going to tie up some big jigs for salmon and maybe rockfish if I get out to the coast. That means big heads with 2/0 - 3/0 plated hooks. No bronze. I'll probably be catching pinks, but there's...

Something every boater needs to see...

I recently bought my first inflatable pontoon intending to use it for stillwater and some leisurely floats, so I've been reading up on boating safety. Happened across this video and thought I'd share. [video=youtube] The scariest part is the current can grab you even if you approach the dam...

You people are a bad influence

Went to Cabela's today to see if they had any fly tying stuff on clearance, and just look what followed me home. Someone owes me sixty bucks! :D

    Fox fur fire tigers

Used fluorescent yellow/chart and orange fur from my new super bright arctic fox scarf (along with a patch of kelly green arctic fox from the fly shop) to make these fire tigers. The body chenilles are green eyed lady and volcano. The black stripes and dark green on the back came from a couple...

Huge amounts of arctic fox hair in every crappie's favorite colors

I keep an eye out on ebay for useful looking fur garments. About a month ago, a multicolored scarf made from arctic fox in bright pink, yellow and orange popped up. I wanted to bid on it, but forgot about it until the auction was over. When it came up again, I managed to win one. I finally...

Hydrographic maps for your smartphone for $0.99!

I have used the Navionics USA app for over a year. Great backup GPS/depth finder for lakes and inshore marine areas. It's usually around $10 (varies with the exchange rate since it's a foreign company) but I got an update earlier today and checked the page to see what the update included. It...

    Sportsman's Warehouse feather score!

Stopped at the local Sportsman's Warehouse today because it was on the way to another place I was going. Had a quick look around the fly tying section and found they are selling Whiting Fly Tier's Variety Packs for $7 and some change! Seems to be normal price, not on sale or anything. Bought a...

Thoughts about people selling jigs with "my" pattern

I wrote this in reply to another thread, then figured it was a good idea to create another one so as not to derail the first. Anyway... There's the potential for someone to take and sell your pattern any time you post a jig or fly pic. For the vast majority of patterns, it's not hard to tell...

    Cutting down magnum zonkers?

I found a deal on another bunny scarf. It had tassels running down the sides that are made from 1/8" strips, but the strips that made up the body of the scarf are 1/4". So now I have about 30 feet of cotton candy pink magnum zonkers. They're too wide for palmering, so I want to slice some of...

    Rabbit from alternative sources

Advantages: Color Cost Quality Disadvantages: Color Prep time Cut variety You might be curious why I listed color as an advantage and a disadvantage. The reason is there is a lot of color variety, but for obvious reasons they're mostly colors people want to wear. Black, white and shades of...
