The Spaceship Jig

Heres something Ive been tying for a few years now. Well, tying isn't how it started.
I was just adding soft plastics when I first tried it.
The idea came to me when I saw an ad for the Jig Disc. I'll leave you to search for that, but suffice it to say its a wing on top of the jig head. I'm not one to pay for stuff I can simple make myself.
So I just cut out a disc from stiff clear plastic, and added it to a jig head. I scavenge the plastic from clear product packaging. And you thought that stuff was just a PITA!
Once the disc is cut out, I poke a small hole in the center, which is the same size as the hook wire diameter. Then I force the hole over the eye where it locks in place.
The effect is to "fly" the jig as it falls. Just like the rotor on a helicopter. When sized right, so the disc's rim just reaches the hook gape, it will spiral and kind of swoop as it drops. This one is a tad small, but serves to illustrate the technique.
I've used hollow punches to cut out the discs, but no longer have any. Whatever works, so I just cut this one out with scissors.

At the rear is blue flash and a pheasant feather, to simulate a tail. The body is just some glitter chenille. I last added some "fins" from blue flash - hopefully the thing will look like a swimming fish!

In case you wondered, I call it a "spaceship jig," cos it reminds me of a Federation starship from the Star Trek series. Feedback please.

It is a rapala jig, great for deep water walleye late in the year. Has a swooping circular descent

WOW!!

I've used panfish versions of this, on 1/64 jigs. The fish will strike them.
The one shown here is on a 1/8 ball head, and It hasn't been tested.
The disc will likely get bigger, but with cold weather around the corner... It may wait til next year.

Could these be useful? They're also available in shapes like hearts for maybe a different action.

their version needs a swivel or snap attached to hold it in places, so Hawnjigs. looks like you found a really inexpensive substitute. But I think Huttaro is on the right track to making them oval shaped. Will probably give more action than the round disc.

They sure could be used.
I like the clear ones, well, because they're clear.
But whatever you got that fits

I've tried different shapes. The problem is, the "wing" must be oriented properly for the shape to make a difference in how the jig performs.
If they are left to spin around the eye shaft,
they end up any kinda way.

I guess you could pin or staple them to the jig head, then make all kinda wings. A nice delta platform oughta give a good glide, for example.

I'm not eager to get into all that, so I just go with round discs.

Sorry Hutt, tried some between head and tie on the shank, but results were disappointing and I tossed em. They are available in craft stores in the bead craft or sewing sections.

I've been making some like yours, but I use a lighter plastic. Mine are sequins from Hobby Lobby.....thinner plastic about 3/4 inch in diameter. I found by punching the hole off center helps to give a very erratic action when twitched or jerked upwards.....as the disc will rotate at random when moved quickly. I like the iridescent pearl colored discs the most. Being a basically white disc, it will emit a flash in the water when activated in the upper levels of the water column. I use a bead reamer to punch the holes.

There is already a hole, very small, near the edge of the sequin for sewing it onto an item, but it does not seem to have any discernible affect. Also the discs come in a slew of colors....
Also, the discs are thinner and will flex as well as pivot on the hook eye shank. They dart in all sorts of directions when twitched....also simultaneously sending out vibrations in the water.........a sort of wacky rig fishing with a worm sending out pulses.

In making the hole for mounting off center, you will get a few small points on the backside of the disc where the reamer pushes through......I mount these facing down toward the jighead and use a nail file to push them (the teeth) a little tighter around the hook eye shank, but not enough to hinder the movement. Excuse the pun, but if you use the sequins you will probably be
hooked.
