Saltwater Neck Hackle

I was told about using the saltwater hackle instead of regular neck hackle because the feathers are so much wider. I ordered some and really like it. Now I use one feather per jig where I was using two or three. I cut about two inches of the tip off then cut the vien of the feather every 1/4 inch or so creating little V's. I then tie three of the V's and the tip. It looks a lot better than the neck hackle tails I've been tying.

I like it Scott. I haven't re-invested in any of the saltwater stuff. Bought too much of the other that I have to use up first. I still can't get away from using a little maribou for the action. I used fox on that little jig swap, and definitely will get some more of that. It has unbelivable action. This guy here even sells some fox strips like the rabbit. Is this where you got your hackle?

Those are some nice jigs. I have not been working with much feathers but I have hair everywhere! I'm about like Hunter in that I need to use the feathers I have. Why are they called saltwater hackle, are they treated with something.

Hunter - I got the saltwater hackle from Bob Marriott's Fly Shop.
StumpHunter - I think they call it saltwater hackle cause it's larger. I guess for saltwater flies. It costs a little more but you can do a jig with one feather.

Saltwater hackle is better for tails,regular neck hackle is better for bugger type jigs.Saltwater hackle is normally used for big saltwater flies and they tie them in whole. I would never give up all my necks and replace it with the saltwater hackle. Try tying a 1/16 bugger on a #4 hook with sw hackle,doesn't work very well. Just my $.02 ....

What is a bugger? Picture please. Is that a Palmered jig?

I think it's those green things you dig out of your nose. LOL I've seen palmered jigs on EBay called buggers.

It's the name of a fly called a wooly bugger.I tie them on jigs. Yes,it's a palmered jig. Here's a couple pictures. You can call them boogers if you like,but you don't want one of these in your nose.
