Pompano Jigs

There was some discussion about Pompano Jigs :jig: ... I was out for an AM Walk and when I passed a neighbor he brought these out to me....:jig: ...This is how they make them for the "Panhandle" Here in NW FL these were powder painted .. tied and coated with Epoxy ....Joey does a good job.

I admire the salwater tyers whose work I can view over the web. Sometimes, I do pick up some pretty good pointers from discussions at either StripersOnline (SurfTalk) or NC Angler. Unfortunately for me, there isn't any saltwater here in Indiana. Otherwise, I'd be trying out a few similarly-designed home ties.

Those are good looking jigs . The square cut on the tail for some reason gives me the heebeejebies. Looked at to many hair jigs in my life I guess.

Guys in the old days when buying "Store Bought" Pompano Jigs would cut the Nylon off as you see here ... more like a "bug" ... Sand Fleas are the number one live bait for them and this is suppose to be nearer the resemblance (spelling) to them .... Sand Fleas are not Yellow but for years the solid yellow was the #1 choice bounced along sandy bottom .. now the guys are using (as you can see) several other colors.

For years they never used any thing shiny or flashy on the Pompano Jig as the Lady Fish, Spanish Blues and etc would get it before a Pompano would ... now they have gone to some flashy stuff as well. Last one I caught was on my 1/4oz plastic shrimp tail jig ... They are a lot of fun and highly prized as a food fish ... a real challange ... I have actualy not fished for them in several years ... with all the different types of fish here in the area I have had to narrow it down a lot ...The best Pompano Fishing is in the Spring Run (some stay here all year) and this is when my best first best Bass Fishing for the year is at hand.

Yes he, as most of these "dyed in the woods" Pompano Fishermen, do great work ... their tackle is kept looking new ... The jigs are fished by letting them settle to the bottom and "Snappin" them off ... or as the word used in that "circle" is "Popping" a jig. They really have it down to a "T" .....
