How does the balance look on this fly. Put six turns before and after the wing. Used Ozark cinnamon turkey hackle on the tail and Partridge for the wing. I thought they worked good together.

Looks great to me. The first fly I thought of when I saw it was Lee Wulff's "Grizzly Wulff." The way the hackles are trimmed on the bottom, it should float just right in the film. You can't go wrong using Lee Wulff's designs.
Good tie.

Joe, I was working on tying one that Al Campbell has in his Beginning Fly Tying part 16. After tying a few of the Fan Tailed Gray Dun I started tying some flies to use in my trout waters with colors that has been good for me. I trimmed the bottom because Al had stated it helps the fly float.
I don't pay much attention to others "named flies" or the way some think you have to use A&B colors or A&B materials for a fly to work but I try to give credit to named flies, heck I just love to tye flies but I will look up Lee Wulff's Grizzly Wulff as I think the fly will be a great top water fly. I have learned a ton about tying from reading Al Campbell's work but I have a "lot" to learn about flies.

I have Al's lesson's printed out and in a binder, but even better were the many times I chatted with him in the chat room, on the boards and even a few emails with him before he passed away. Just about the time you felt like an idiot he was right there telling you take it easy, and you'll get it. He helped ALOT of folks who were getting into tying and was just an amazing man.

If you really want to get better tying flies, join the Beginners Fly Swap on FAOL. alot of new guys were weary of joining fly swaps and Steve McGarthwaite started one just for them - he has it set up so they tie lots of different patterns that require alot of different skills. Watching as they progress is amazing. Between Al's tying course and Steve's beginner swap it will make you a better tyer with either jigs or flies.

I had the pleasure of meeting Al Campbell at a Fish-In we had in Idaho. It was the year before he died. We sat for a short time at the same tying bench and he showed me how to tie his SHWAPF (Swept Hackle Wingless All Purpose Fly) He gave me that fly and I still have it. It will never touch water as long as I have it. He was truly a wealth of information and a gentleman extraordinaire. His fly tying tutorial is "TOP DRAWER" and it's how I learned to tie flies.
