Good pic of the jigs I tied for Swap #36

Took this pic under natural sunlight after I got the jigs tied.  I used the materials I custom-dyed earlier; I made a post showing the end results of the dye job.

They were rather easy to tie, just took awhile to do each one.  Start the thread, create a dubbing loop at the bend, and fill the loop with some sparkly blue dubbing.  Supposed to use SLF, but I don't have any in that shade, and I couldn't find any at my "local" fly shop.  Ended up using cut up EP fibers in blue.  Once the dubbing loop is spun up, create a "ball" of dubbing.  Tie in a guinea feather by the tip, and wrap the feather like a soft hackle.  Tie off.  Tie in a black Schlappen feather by the tip.  Tie in 5 strands of blue krystal flash (supposed to use sparkle braid, don't have any in that shade).  Advance the thread to the 25% point.  Wrap the krystal flash in touching turns to the 25% point, tie off and trim the excess.  Palmer wrap the schlappen to the same point, and tie off.  Trim the excess.  Create another dubbing loop, fill with some of the blue sparkly stuff, spin it, and make another dubbing ball.  Tie in another guinea feather by the tip, and wrap it like a soft hackle.  Tie in a dyed-blue grizzly hackle feather on either side.  Trim the excess, whip finish, and SHHAN and you're done!

These were originally a pattern for an articulated fly, or a tube fly.  Supposedly Steelhead are bad about short-striking, so this was supposed to increase hookups.  It wasn't until I was ready to send the package off for the swap that I read the regulation about hook sizes in Michigan streams.  Single-point hooks aren't supposed to be greater than 1/2" from point to shank.  Dang it.

Forgot to add that in-between the dubbing ball and the guinea feather, you tie in some black ostrich herls, then some dyed-blue ostrich herls.

Nice jigs!! Instead of changing sizes for hooks why not just ban snagging!! Gonna have to go check out that article, now that the grand daughter is used to fishing we'll be going next time I go out there.

Went an read Common Terms on Michigan Regulations Site

http://www.eregulations.com/michigan/fishing/common-terms/

an artificial lure is defined as a body bait, plug, spinner or spoon. An artificial lure is not a device primarily constructed of lead. From Aug. 1 – Nov. 15, inclusive, terminal fishing gear is restricted to single-pointed, un-weighted hooks, measuring 1/2-inch or less from point to shank or treble hooks 3/8-inch or less from point to shank ONLY when attached to a body bait, plug, spinner or spoon.

An artificial lure is not a device primarily constructed of lead - that to me excludes jigs, and spinnerbaits

Throughout the guide it keeps stating:

" an artificial lure is defined as a body bait, plug, spinner or spoon. An artificial lure is not a device primarily constructed of lead. From Aug. 1 - Nov. 15, inclusive, terminal fishing gear is restricted to single-pointed, un-weighted hooks, measuring 1/2-inch or less from point to shank or treble hooks 3/8-inch or less from point to shank ONLY when attached to a body bait, plug, spinner or spoon.

Again that to me excludes jigs and if you want to get techinical Spinnerbaits as they are with weight on the hook.

So it's time to email the Michigan DNR - hate to go out for a week and get slammed while just taking my grand daughter fishing.  But gotta say your regulations books is just as screwed up as here in Vermont!!!!!!!!

Use multi-pointed hooks exceeding 3⁄8″ between point and shank and/or
single-pointed hooks exceeding ½” between point and shank on all streams
(including tributaries to the Great Lakes) from Aug. 1 – May 31.
it was some rivers etc now all in new rule book ,dnr use a 1/2 or 3/8
wood dowel to check with.

Yeah, the rules are messed up. More complex than what it was down in OK. Snagging is prohibited, but there are restrictions on types/sizes of gear you can use to help enforce the "no snagging" policy.

That doesn't stop a lot of people. Some folks go "flossing", which is technically snagging, but they manage to get the line between the fish's jaws, when the hook hits the fish, it snags the fish in the jaw. Many of the C.O.'s (game wardens) know what to look for when people are doing that.

true messed up and stupid.
I run 1 single on the back of my hot n tots and warts
with barb facing up and avoids snags better
but same goes for them and stupid rules but the smaller
single I think actually holds better and harder for them to through it.
i have caught fish with snagging gear stuck in the side or back of fish
and again if they look at your fish and it has these marks you can be fined
even though you caught it legal.just all a big mess they stick us with.

Nice jig Allen

I would disagree & take this one to court since most of my jigs & spinnerbaits are less than 1/2" from point to shank and imho, these two baits are not primarily lead -

Gonna have to agree with hookup...

terminal fishing gear is restricted to single-pointed, un-weighted hooks, measuring 1/2-inch or less from point to shank

I sent an email to the Michigan DNR for clarification. They're transferring it to the proper dept.!!

When I hear something I'll post it up
