Grizzley Fur Jig

Just posted this jig on my blog. Head on over there when you get the time if you want tying specifics. You are welcome to ask questions or leave comments on my blog site also. Anyway, here is what I have been working on this evening. Note: It's late for my ol' eyes and I noticed I could have done a better job as trimming around the jig head. Do you think the fish really care?[/b]

I've never seen a griz or its fur, and am surprised that your tie is whitish and seems to have an attractive sheen. What part of the body provides this fur?

Fish don't care Gramps, only the angler.

Intersting fur.

I got lucky & came into allot of bearhair in shade from black to brown. Fish like the action in the water.

I must confess here that I am sorry to mislead you and others on the name of this jig. Even though I live in bear country, I don't like them well enough to get that close too them.

The material used here for the over and under bodies are from Craft Fur.
I came across a barred piece that looks exactly like Grizzley hackle in long and flowing fur/hair form. I snatched it up and am using it to tie some baitfish type jigs.

True "Bear Hair" is hard to come by for sure. Yes, it does have a good swimming action in the water when used. The "Artificial Stuff" is easier to come by and much cheaper.

Craft fur is coming on strong for a lot of tiers.

Love bear hair, as I also tie flys when I comb out the underfur I save it for dubbing.

I also found some of the craft fur in the grizzly last year in Hobby Lobby. It does make some interesting tyes but the material doesn't seem to be as thick as other craft furs. Nice tye.

StumpHunter, I agree with you on the Grizzly color hair. I just compensate by using a little more than necessary. Really like the appearance of it in the water and in the pattern.

That's a sweet little jig Gramps, really like the colour combo and how the thread makes a lovely tapered profile body.

I only had to wait 3 years for the shipment. LoL

Used some bear in the recent jig swap.

I'm now working on getting some mink - a lady collects old fur stoles and when they fall apart, she makes other clothing with the mink - I'm trying to by her scraps.

Yes, indeed, the real thing always seems to be more difficult to come by. More and more hi-tech artificial materials are flooding the market and making tying with real stuff a memory in a lot of ways.

That is a lifetime worth of hair there. I am envious. Interesting to see how your Zonker strips work out.

Let us know how that works out. I have not tied with Mink so curious as too the patterns you would tie...............

I wrap them on small heads and sometimes as a collar. Trying to make a cutter that won't take off my fingers so I can cut more than one at a time and a uniform width. Found a wood handled one on the internet at a salt water site but I sure ain't paying for the instructions to make it!!LOL

Mine will be simple since the fish I'm chasing don't care much. Minnow pattern, or craw style pattern in natural colors.

Pretty much a student of Charlie Brewer & his SLIDER technique

Minnow's are the Do-Nothing retrieve and craws are for the lift-n-drop retrieve

Gotten into some heated discussions on other boards where SLIDER fishing is a technique (which I believe) rather than a chunk of lead & plastic (which others believe - probably retailers of the product?).

There was some pretty good barred craft fur available from bolts online thru Hancock Fabrics. Nice tie.
